Where are the delightful walkable places?

We found some greenfield housing developments that were the right scale and pleasant for walking, with shops and other facilities in the area and served by public transport. But they were rare.

New Lubbersthorpe was laid out around good pavements and streets, and green areas.

Poundbury, Dorset is a mixed development built around streets and walkable community facilities.

Green Park Village near Reading is a mixed-use housing development with local amenities at the nearby Green Park Business Park. There is a gym, restaurant, shops and railway station in walking distance.

Although strictly speaking a brownfield development—it is built on a former Ministry of Defence site—we include Holborne Park, Bath in this theme. This is because much effort has been in the planting and walking routes into town, and buses stop nearby on the main road. The location of the site on a hillside makes the best of panoramic views of the city and you really don’t need to have a car to live there. It is a mix of houses and apartments.
