What do we mean by good design?

We rarely visit anywhere that is perfect, but we do see lots of little good things along the way. Here are seven examples of good design we have seen and would like to see repeated.

Wide pavements and street furniture designed as part of a scheme with drainage discouraging pavement parking.

A place to store bins away from the pavement.

Raised kerb to assist getting on and off the bus with high quality shelter.

Waste and recycling stored underground, freeing up more of the pavement.

Space designed to prioritise walking and cycling with cars accommodated only if they are slow or parked in permitted spots.

Open spaces in convenient locations overlooked by the homes to encourage safety.

Public art encourages walking by creating routes that are not just functional but delightful.

With a little bit of thought it is possible to design places that enable residents to live full lives without the need to own a car.

Our first annual State of the Nation report will be released soon. Please contribute to our fundraiser to help us keep going.
